Hyderabad: The Department of Panchayat Raj received about 4,000 applications for formation of new gram panchayats in the State from the legislators and other stakeholders. The Collectors were asked to process them to study the feasibility.

The new panchayats will be formed by March,2018 so that elections can be held to them along with the existing panchayats. The term of the existing panchayats will end in August 2018.

According to officials there was a good response for the decision of the government to form the new GPs in the State. The MLAs, party leaders and social activists had submitted 4,000 applications so far. Some applications had been submitted to the Collectors and Commissioner of Panchayat Raj.

Officials are waiting for the guidelines from the government to process the applications. As the government proposed to bring new Panchayat Raj Act in the State, some delay may take place in this regard, they said.

The Chief Minister had announced several times that new gram panchayats would be formed in the State for administrative convenience. He had asked the MLAs to recommend the new panchayats in their constituencies, during the recent Assembly session.

As the existing 8,400 panchayats in the State, have not been rationalised for decades, some panchayats had grown abnormally in terms of population.

The distance between hamlets and the panchayat office is also more than recommended. Panchayat Raj Department officials said that as part of formation of new panchayats distance between the hamlets and panchayat office and population of the panchayat would be taken into consideration. The government will issue exact guidelines.

The tribal tandas will also be made panchayats as per the directions of the Chief Minister. The Collectors have been asked to examine the applications for new villages and they should submit feasibility reports to the Panchayat Raj Department. The Revenue Department officials will study survey numbers and propose boundaries of new panchayats.

The government is inclined to form 2,000 new panchayats in the State over the existing ones, including the tribal tandas. Several big villages will be divided into two or three panchayats. Officials said that with the formation of new panchayats, flow of funds would rise to the rural areas.

The State and Central government have been giving funds directly to the villages for sanitation, construction of roads, street lights, electrification, construction of buildings for the schools, anganwadi centres, health centres and others.
