Hyderabad: The World Telugu Conference (WTC) concluded on Tuesday, on a note of hope that Telugu language will get the necessary boost it requires to remain alive at all times. The five-day conference which started on December 15 was a well-coordinated extravaganza that engaged Telugu scholars in literary pursuits.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao gave the valedictory speech. The conference attracted pundits from all parts of the State and 42 nations.

Marking the end of the literary festivity, a spectacular display of fireworks lit up Hyderabad skyline in iridescent colours. A 20-minute documentary on Telangana culture and heritage along with Perini-traditional folk dance by a group of students enthralled the audience.

Speaking at the event, the President extolled the Telugu community for their contributions to the world and India in the fields of technology, research, entrepreneurship, and in other emerging sectors.

“From South Africa to Southeast Asia, Telugu speakers and the Telugu community are acknowledged as achievers,” he said. In the United States, Telugus had even been elected to public office, and are well known as entrepreneurs, doctors and technologists, he added. It is a matter of pride that CEO Satya Nadella of the technology giant Microsoft is a Telugu.

The President came out with a new definition for Hyderabad as a city of Biryani, Badminton and Bahubali, and said the city gave the country delicious food, a string of badminton champions and films that are an expression of Indian soft power. Telugu cuisine is popular in Delhi, particularly the pickles, he pointed out.

The President said Telugu had often been called a bridge language between the South and the North of the country. Like the Telugu people, it had been assimilative and had accepted and embraced words, thoughts and ideas from other cultures. Telugu had incorporated words from Sanskrit, Arabic, Urdu and English, among other languages, he added.

The city of Hyderabad is a bridge between many cultures and regions of India. ‘It is a pan-Indian city as well as a global metropolis. Its technology industry, pharmaceutical companies and vaccine innovators have contributed significantly to the nation, Kovind said.

The President congratulated Telangana government for achieving first rank in Ease of Doing. “For a new State such as Telangana to make rapid strides and show such potential as a business and industrial location is creditable,” he said.
