Hyderabad: Praja Sanghala Ummadi Vedika on Tuesday condemned the Tekulapally police encounter and demanded that an independent inquiry be set up to investigate the police involvement in the alleged fake encounter. The Vedika demanded that the government take stern action against the involved personnel.

The Praja Sanghala Ummadi Vedika organised a round table meeting here at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram on Tuesday. Speaking at the meeting, the speakers alleged that there had been many incidents of ‘State murders’ after the formation of Telangana, including killing of chain snatcher Shiva, who was shot dead at Shamshabad, Vikaruddin and four others, who were under judicial custody, Shruti, Sagar in Medaram forest and now the Tekulapally encounter. The speakers alleged that the encounters were fake, and instead were murders by the police.

Varavara Rao of Virasam, said that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao should be held responsible for the encounter. He said the government was trying to handover the lands along the Godavari River to private companies.

“In the name of construction of projects like Kaleshwaram, Medigadda or others, the government was taking away the lands belonging to tribals, to give them to multinational companies,” Varavara Rao alleged. The tribals are killed in the name of Maoists and extremists, he added. He demanded that an independent inquiry be set up on the encounter and action against the police responsible for the 'fake encounter'.

Poet Vimalakka alleged that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government was giving Nara bali (human sacrifice) after the formation of Telangana. “The people who are voicing apprehensions are getting killed. The sections that fought for Telangana are not visible and the benefits are enjoyed by those who were never part of the agitation,” Vimalakka said.

The poets, who are attending the World Telugu Conference, should speak out against the successive encounters in the State, Vimalakka added. “Are you not the poets, why are you silent on the issue. Do you want to be in good books of the government? At least now you should register protest,” Vimalakka said. She further alleged that as a gift for World Telugu Conference, the police killed tribals in the name of encounter.

The speakers took exception to the lathi- charge at Mallanasagar, attacks on T-JAC chief Prof Kodandaram’s house, relocation of dharna chowk, illegal cases against Osmania University students. They demanded that the government remove the ban on dharna chowk.

Condemning the encounter, Prof Jaidev Sharma said hijacking the literature and art was also like an encounter. He questioned the mismanagement in the World Telugu Conference. He alleged that the attacks have increased on the people who were questioning the land lords and investors.
