Mancherial/Utnoor: The growing rivalry between Adivasis and Lambadas flared up once again on Tuesday with the former taking to streets in Kothapet Lambada Thanda in Jannaram mandal of Mancherial district setting fire to vehicles and hay stacks.

The Adivasis reached the Thanda despite police trying to prevent them from creating trouble and went on the rampage, trying to avenge the alleged attack on an Adivasi youth on Monday night. The Adivasi youth was keeping a watch near a water body at the Thanda when the culprits reached there and soon an argument ensured between the two over the release of water to their fields. Soon tempers ran high and in a fit of rage, they thrashed the youth and left.

The Adivasis who suspected that the culprits were Lambadas began regrouping themselves and were planning an attack on the Lambada Thanda when the police arrived in strength and held talks with the agitated youth. But they did not listen to the entreaties of the police and managed to reach the Thanda and set fire to some vehicles. Tension prevailed in the village with a number of policemen keeping a vigil on the trouble makers.

Meanwhile, the police have intensified inquiry into the clashes that broke out in Utnoor on December 15. Superintendent of Police Vishnu S Warrier who held a teleconference on Tuesday with the officials directed them to continue their vigil in the Agency besides holding meetings with Adivasis and Lambadas. He told them to instill confidence among both the groups.

The police are taking the help of CCTV footage and photos to identify those persons who triggered clashes. This apart, the police have kept an eye on social networking sites for those who spread rumours, creating panic among people.

Additional SP S Mohan Reddy and Special Branch DSP A Vishwa Prasad were among others present.

The police carried out flag marches in several villages to create a sense of confidence among the people.

The region has been witnessing feuds between the Adivasis and Lambadas for the last several weeks with the former demanding removal of the latter from the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).
