Hyderabad: Professor Jaya- shankar Telangana State Agriculture University (PJTSAU) Vice-Chancellor Dr V Praveen Rao urged social scientists to play a key role in taking technological outputs to the doorsteps of farmers in order to improve their livelihoods.

He was addressing a brainstorming session on the “Role of Social Science in Agriculture Research and Development System,” which was jointly orgnaised by PJTSAU and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) New Delhi office, here on Tuesday.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed on the need to fill up the productivity gaps in the various crops, in particular, rice through which it provides additional income to the farmers.

He said the PJTSAU is ready to join hands for mutual cooperation to support the farming community in the South-Asian region. Rao also invited the international panel members to join the university as experts in their interested fields to help the Telangana State as well as students of the university to achieve the vision of making the university as an international university. The Vice-Chancellor also lauded the IRRI for extending support in capacity building training for the faculty and students and also helping in the supply of Rice Germplasm to the university.

Dr Nafees Meah, IRRI, South Asia Representative spoke about the strategies adopted by the IRRI to strengthen the social science research in the region.

The participants highlighted the need for an effective collaboration between biological sciences and social sciences.

Representatives from IRRI India and Bangladesh, Indian Council for Agricultural Research Institutes (ICARI) in Rajendranagar, and experts from eight South Asian countries participated in the session.
