Hyderabad: The Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) under the Commissioner and Directorate of Municipal Administration (CDMA) has come up with a mobile app ‘Urban Dost’, which would enable citizens to help destitute and homeless people to shift them to nearby shelter homes.

Speaking to The Hans India, a senior official said that all one needs is a smart phone for reporting a homeless person and the user should download the mobile app ‘Urban Dost’ from the Google play store. “It is basically to let the citizens contribute to the cause of ‘urban homeless shelters’. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs had established shelter for urban homeless under DAY-NULM (Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission) in various ULBs” said the official. The official said that recently, one of the citizens posted a picture of an old woman lying on the roadside and tagged Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao on his social networking page. Based on the directions of the Minister, the destitute was taken to the hospital and provided the medical services.

CDMA Mission Director T K Sreedevi said that there would be good Samaritans in the society, who are willing to help the people in need, but they don’t have any idea on how to do it. Though there are shelter homes on the roadsides, people are not aware of them. The government is planning to launch a mobile app ‘Urban Dost’ which would be helpful for citizens to locate the nearest shelter home of the municipality. Once the app is started, it would open camera and the citizen needs to take a picture of the destitute and upload it on the app. The app would find the nearest location from where the picture is taken with the help of GPS. The citizens can also send in the details of the homeless such as gender, age etc. Once the details are entered, the information is sent to the local officer, who would take immediate step.

The official said that the mobile app was on testing stage and would be launched by Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao soon.
