Vijayawada: It is a piquant situation with the noted pandits and astrologers having divided into two groups over declaring important Sankranti festival dates. The familiar pandits including Srinivasa Gargeya, Kanchipetam Asthana Siddhanthi, LV Subramanyam and film hero Balakrishna’s personal astrologer Karuparthi Nagamalleshwara Rao, mentioned January 14 as the date for Sankranti festival in the Panchangam books.

But the most prominent TTD Panchangam declared Sankranti falls on January 15. Interestingly, the TTD website differs from the TTD Panchangam date; it shows Jan 14 as the Sankranti date. Observers say that the festival date has been changed on the website a few days ago. On the other hand, Srisailam temple Panchangakartha Butte Veerabhadra Daivagna fixed Sankranti on two different dates as Jan 14 and Jan 15 in his two versions of books. Nearly 100 astrologers in the two Telugu states confusingly are setting muhurthams in two different dates for the most important festival Sankranti.

According to reports, the difference of opinion for setting up of muhurthams for Telugu festivals has been continuing for the past several years. A section of astrologers are following the Druk Siddhantham and some others are depended on Poorvapaddathi in making Panchangam. The two groups fixed different muhurthams for Krishna and Godavari pushkaralu in the past. The government also faced challenge to avoid confusion among the public about pushkaralu inaugural schedule in the past. Though the controversy has been continuing since long ago, but the government did not take any steps putting an end to every year confusion.

Actually the endowment and cultural departments are working under the state government. The departments have already appointed noted pandits, astrologers and advisers for various purposes to supervise Hindu rituals and activities. The Vedic committees and Agama boards are also working under the government. But significantly some of the members in the committees also differ on fixing muhurthams for important festive occasions.

Noted astrologer Ponnaluri Gargeya, speaking to The Hans India, said Druk Ganitham was approved by Union government and it had been publishing Panchangams in various regional languages. As per the Druk system, Sankranti is on January 14 when Sun enters in to Makara Rasi at 1.46 pm. So it is called Makara Sankramanam or Sankranti. He said the people could watch it through telescopes also.

He wondered how the poorva paddathi astrologers wrongly declared Sankranti date as January 15. He asked the government to stop confusion by convening a meeting with experts and astrologers for taking up steps. He flayed some of the government astrologers and temples pandits for making wrong announcements due to negligence.
