Hyderabad: State government proposes to set up charging points for electric vehicles at some key junctions in the public sector following strong indications that electric vehicles will flood automobile market in next two years in Telangana.

On the side-lines of the preparation of Electric Vehicle Policy by the State Industries Department which is under progress, the power utilities were entrusted to study the viability of the establishment of electric charging stations.

The proposal to set up charging stations got significance as the utilities already introduced another consumer category calling it as electric chargers in the tariff proposals submitted by the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL).At present, the power tariff is collected under domestic, commercial and industrial categories. The new category of electric chargers will have separate traffic structure once the Telangana State Electricity Regulation Commission (TSERC) approves the new tariff proposals and Aggregate Revenue Requirements (ARRs).

Top official of the State Energy Department said the proposal to set up charging centres by the utilities was at initial stage. The managements of the power utilities are studying the business viability of its maintenance in the public sector as many private firms are getting ready to enter into the new market in a big way.

The official said the feasibility reports confirmed the business potential for the electric chargers was high in the State in future. The increased power generation capacity with the upcoming thermal projects, with 5,000 MW installed capacity, will be an advantage to open charging stations by the utilities on its own.

The only major challenge before the utilities is the competition they will face with private players in offering the best services and earn profits. Public and Private Partnership (PPP) is also one of the options to set up the charging stations in the districts. A decision whether to foray into the new business will be taken only after the finalisation of electric vehicle policy by State Industries Department.
