Hyderabad: Hyderabad cricket hit a new low, albeit this time not on the field but right at the building where the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) is headquartered. Pandemonium and unruly scenes were the order of the day even before the controversial Special General Meeting (SGM) of the association was to commence. Ostensibly, the meeting was convened to get the Lodha panel’s reforms passed.

Trouble began minutes after former India captain Mohd Azharuddin entered the scene and was barred from attending the meeting. That was enough to trigger a massive unrest with some of the big guns expressing solidarity with the ‘victim’. At his boisterous best was veteran Congress leader, V Hanumanth Rao, who staged a spontaneous sit-in demanding that Azhar be allowed to attend the meeting.

Also rising to the occasion were N Shivlal Yadav, SL Venkatapathi Raju and Noel David. The HCA officials relented and the former skipper was allowed entry.

However, much to the chagrin of HCA president G Vivekananda, he was subject to an even more noisy reception with a majority of the 170 members launching virulent attacks and sloganeering that made a mockery of democratic functioning.

The exasperated president reportedly walked out when barely half-a-dozen members supported adoption of the Lodha recommendations while the others sought clarity, transparency and even fresh elections as a means to stem the rot. He walked out in a huff while insisting that the reforms have been adopted. Ironically, the incumbent Secretary T Shesh Narayan has been suspended and there is no joint Secretary.

Shivlal Yadav decried the falling standards and lamented the sorry state-of-affairs prevalent in HCA. He said he would take up the issue with BCCI bosses, particularly the ill-treatment meted out to Azharuddin.

The former captain slammed the HCA officials for their highhanded behaviour when the laws of the land had cleared him off all match-fixing charges.

He said he would rush the videos of the day’s proceedings to the Ombudsman and expose the nefarious intentions of Vivekanand and his coterie.
