Medaram (Jayashankar-Bhupalpally): Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has showered largesse on Medaram by announcing Rs 200 crore for improving infrastructure and facilities for Sammakka and Saralamma Jatara.

The Chief Minister, after paying obeisance with his wife and MP daughter K Kavitha to tribal deities on Friday, the penultimate day of the four-day festivities, told media-persons that though Medaram is a biennial jatara, of late, it was drawing devotees round the year and in view of increased footfalls, measures would be initiated for comprehensive development of the facilities for Jatara.

KCR said that in the ensuing budget, he would have Rs 200 crore allocated for the fest. “Expansion of temple is a dire necessity for which it needs around 200 acres,” the Chief Minister said, adding that he will come back in a fortnight and discuss it with the district administration and tribal priests.

Besides providing a permanent infrastructure, construction of a mini-dam is also being mooted, KCR said. By next biennial jatara, Medaram will be transformed so that it would be a cynosure of all eyes, he said.

“Despite the efforts of our MPs, the Central government didn’t accord national status to the jatara. I would, however, insist with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on making it happen,” the Chief Minister said, stating that visit of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh spoke eloquently the importance of the jatara.

There was not much focus on Medaram in the united Andhra Pradesh, he said, terming the jatara as southern Kumbh Mela. “When I was here last time, I prayed for Telangana to happen.

Now I pray the deities to bless the State’s upcoming irrigation projects, besides opening the eyes of Opposition parties that are obstructing the development,” KCR said. "The very essence of Medaram jatara reflects what combativeness is all about," the Chief Minister said.

“The tribal deity – Sammakka – is a symbol of fighting spirit of what an individual can do in trying conditions, which the Telangana people also have,” he said. For the CM’s visit, the devotee darshan was stopped for about one hour. Deputy Chief Minister K Srihari, Endowments Minister A Indrakaran Reddy and Mahabubabad MP A Sitaram Naik were among others present on the occasion.
