Even though the Union government accorded sanction for national highways to the extent of 3,100 km after the formation of Telangana State, not a single highway development project has been taken up so far. The Centre has not notified the highways.

Although the State government nearly completed land acquisition for all the sanctioned national highways, Union Ministry of Roads and Highways put the State’s request for release of funds in the cold storage during the last three years. The State government has also expressed its displeasure over release of meagre funds for maintenance of existing national highways.

State Roads and Buildings (R and B) Department officials said that Minister for Roads and Buildings T Nageshwara Rao took serious note of the delay in issuing the notification for the execution of works relating to the highways.

He expressed his disapproval of the Union government at a meeting with the top officials of the department here. Nearly 3,153 km extent of national highways were sanctioned after the State formation in addition to a mere 2,527 km of existing national highways in the State.

The State government also prepared proposals to covert State highways into national highways to 1,207 km extent on 11 roads in the State. An official delegation, led by the Minister will meet the Union Ministry in New Delhi and submit proposals soon.

Construction of two bridges on river Godavari and a bridge on Maneru under LWE (Left Wing Extremists) affected areas development programme and the release of funds for the development of regional Outer Ring Road (ORR) around Hyderabad will also be included in the list of demands to be submitted to the Union Ministry.
