Hyderabad: The prestigious Kaleshwaram project has attracted national attention. An official team from the 15th Finance Commission will visit the project site on February 10.

As part of the three-day stay in the city to hold its first official meeting with representatives from the Southern states from February 9, the Commission members have decided to pay a visit to the project and spent the entire day there and review the progress of the project.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, the TS government has decided to seek the Commission’s help for getting central funds.

Union Ministry of Water Resources and official teams from many state governments have already visited Kaleshwaram, which is one of the largest irrigation project under construction in the country.
Commission Chairman NK Singh and the members Shakthikanta Das, Ashok Lahiri and Anoop Singh will be on a three-day visit to Telangana from February 9.

The commission will hold meeting with the officials of state Finance departments of Telangana , Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu , Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala. After constitution of the Commission, the Chairman is holding the first meeting with the southern states to seek suggestions on the allocation of funds by the Centre to the state.

Telangana Irrigation officials said that the government will make a special presentation on Kaleshwaram project before the commission and explain the necessity of central assistance for the completion of the multi-crore project. The government has already requested the Centre for the sanction of Rs 10,000 crore for Kaleshwaram under the category of project of national importance.

As the Centre did not earmark any funds in 2018-19 budget, the Commission’s visit to the project will give an opportunity to the TS government to pursue the issue of central assistance seriously. Chief Secretary SK Joshi and top irrigation officials will accompany the Commission and explain in detail the importance of the project for irrigation and drinking water needs.

Officials said that state Finance department will also make a presentation before the commission on the need to increase devolution of funds from the Centre to complete the flagship schemes like Mission Bhagiratha and Mission Kakatiya. NITI Aayog has already recommended the release of Rs 19,000 crore for Mission Bhagiratha and Rs 5,000 crore for Mission Kakatiya schemes.
