Hyderabad: Differences between the Joint Action Committee of Teachers’ Organisations (JACTO) and the School Education Department (SED) continue to cast a shadow on the finalisation of the academic calendar for the year 2018-19.

It may be mentioned here that the JACTO, an umbrella organisation of 22 teachers had come down heavily on the SED for painting them in poor light. The differences between JACTO and SED ended up with postponement of two meeting scheduled to happen on February 10 and February 15, to finalise the academic calendar. According to the SED sources, the teacher’s organisations are not happy with the tough stand taken by the SED Director Kishan on growing menace of absenteeism in the schools.

Speaking to The Hans India, a senior official from the SED said, "Some teachers are frequently irregular in attending their duties which is seriously affecting the overall performance and functioning of the schools.”

Also, it was found that some teachers were busy in running illegal and unauthorised chit fund and real estate business which is causing them to skip their duties. All this is boiling down adversely impact on the performance of the schools. Particularly, school children in the rural and quasi urban areas are suffering the most, the sources added. The Telangana State United Teachers Federation (TSUTF), General Secretary Chava Ravi had dismissed and said it was unfair to put all in the same basket. He said that all teachers’ organisations had asked the director of SED to act tough against such teachers.

Also, to replicate the monitoring system successfully implemented in Adilabad to prevent teachers’ absenteeism. The TSUTF General Secretary admitted that some teachers are resorting to the other activities like chits and real estate business, particularly those who are living nearer to the urban centres. "Their number is nominal and even most of them have the backing of either one or the other political leaders of the ruling party and the like. The officials were never dared to touch them due to their background," he said.

Following the ongoing tussle between the two, Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari has decided to hold the meeting in his presence on Saturday to bring the two to sort of their differences and to ensure that the academic calendar is finalised soon.
