A Hyderabad woman who had been stuck in Pakistan for years returned home on Wednesday after she received help from the Union External Affairs Ministry.

The woman, Mohammadia Begum was trapped in Lahore after being deceived by her husband. The 45-year-old woman had got married in 1996 with the nikah having been performed on phone from Muscat where the man lived. But upon reaching there, the woman realised her husband was a Pakistani national and later took her to Pakistan. Despite her several requests he refused to allow her to return to India.

Her parents had made desperate pleas to rescue Begum as her husband had been harassing her.

NRI affairs minister KT Rama Rao pursued the case of Mohammadia Begum with the external affairs ministry and with Minister Sushma Swaraj’s instructions, the High Commission of India in Islamabad came to Mohammadia Begum's rescue.

Now that she has returned home, Begum's parents are relieved that their daughter has finally arrived in India.
