Following the encounter between Maoists and Greyhound anti-insurgency police force near the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border on Friday, the Hyderabad High Court has directed the Telangana government to conduct autopsies and hand over the bodies of slain Maoists to their families.

While the encounter site falls within Chhattisgarh territory, some of the slain Maoists were brought to Bhadrachalam hospital in Telangana.

Ordering authorities to ensure the forensic experts and senior medical officers complete the autopsy, the bench of Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice K Vijaya Lakshmi directed that the bodies be handed over to the relatives.

The order was issued after hearing a PIL filed by president of the Civil Liberties Committee, Gaddam Lakshman who said that NHRC directions need to be followed as the bodies of Naxalites are at a government hospital in Bhadrachalam.

The Court gave directions to the state to follow a similar procedure for all bodies brought to Bhadrachalam and the process of the autopsy done by forensic experts be videographed.
