Hyderabad: Police have foiled the Million March which was planned to be organised by Telangana Joint Action Committee and other Left parties at Tank Bund on Saturday.

Thousands of TJAC and left activists and leaders including TJAC Chairman Prof. M. Kodandaram and CPI State Secretary Chada Venkat Reddy were arrested by the police. The TJAC, CPI, New Democracy CPI (ML) had planned to organise a march from 1 pm to 4 pm at Tank Bund to commemorate the anniversary of Million March which was organised on the same day in 2011 as part of Telangana agitation. However, police did not permit the programme.

While vehicular traffic was banned on Tank Bund throughout the day, checks were conducted at various places in the city to prevent assembling of TJAC activists at the venue. Large number of policemen was deployed at the residence of TJAC Chairman and the moment Kodandaram came out of his house at about 3 pm, he was arrested and shifted to Bollaram Police Station. Hundreds of TJAC activists held protest in Tarnaka against the arrest of Kondaram.

Meanwhile, CPI leader Venkat Reddy and his supporters were arrested when they tried to march towards Tank Bund from their office Makhdoom Bhavan in Himayath Nagar. They were shifted to Begum Bazar police.

Earlier, speaking to media persons at his residence, Kodandaram alleged that the TRS Government was not permitting Million March agitation to hide its failures. He said despite several hurdles by the then Andhra leaders, Million March was organised in 2011. However, now after the formation of Telangana State, present TRS government is suppressing the people's voice.

Kodandaram said that the formation of new State did not solve the problems being faced by the people in this region. He said agriculture sector was in deep crisis. Unemployment has been rising in an alarming proportion and all sections of the society are unhappy with the performance of present government.

He alleged that the police have illegally arrested over 3,500 TJAC workers from across the Telangana State. He demanded that all arrested workers be released immediately and cases registered against them be withdrawn unconditionally.
