Mupkal (Nizamabad): In yet another incident of roadside open wells turning into graveyards, 10 persons -- six women and four children -- lost their lives when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling plunged into an agricultural well.

The mishap occurred between Mupkal and Mendora on Sunday afternoon, when the overloaded autorickshaw with around 15 persons was heading towards Mendora.

It’s learnt that rash and negligent driving seems to be the reason for the accident. The agriculture well is said to be just a few yards away from the road.

The deceased were identified as Nagampet Sayamma, 50, of Vempally, Madhikunta Laxmi, 38, of Dharmora, Kasapuram Gangavva, 45, of Keshapuram in Dichpally, Pedholla Sampath, 14, of Varni, Gundram Gangamani, 45, of Kesapuram, Baby Manaswini, 3, of Aloor, Mettu Vinaya Sree, 6, of Kodicherla, Theddu Roja, 25, of Chittapoor and Theddu Chinni, 2, of Chittapoor. The details of other deceased are yet to be ascertained.

District Collector M Ram Mohan Rao and Commissioner of Police Kartikeya, who rushed to the spot, took stock of the situation. The Commissioner of Police said overloading and over-speeding is the reason behind the accident.

The well didn’t have protecting wall or fencing thus led to the drowning of commuters, he added. He said five of the 15, including the driver, travelling in the auto are safe. However, the administration has made arrangements to pump out water from the well.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy expressed shock over the incident and ordered the Collector to provide medical care to the survived.
