Hyderabad: The average grade of the government degree colleges in the State is one of the highest in the country with regard to National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accreditations.

According to Department of Higher Education (DHE), a distinct feature of accreditation of colleges in Telangana is the higher order of grades achieved by the colleges in the State, reflecting the quality enhancement achieved. For this, the department sources said several measures have been taken to motivate the staff and students of the colleges to obtain NAAC accreditation, which is a significant parameter for measuring the quality education imparted in the colleges.

Following the mandatory provision of the University Grants Commission (UGC)-2012 NAAC Regulation Act, all the government degree colleges (GDCs) should get accredited with NAAC assessment. Accordingly, by the end of the academic year of 2017-18, out of 131 GDCs in the State, 64 colleges were accredited by NAAC. Out of them, seven GDCs were accredited with A grade, 49 with B grade and eight with C grade, the officials said.

To ensure that all GDCs get proper guidance, a State Quality Assurance Cell (SQAC) has been established as a unit in the Commissioner of Collegiate Education (CCE). The Cell has been entrusted to plan and organise activities and programmes that help the colleges expedite the NAAC accreditation process. Further, the Cell will also take up quality-enhancing activities besides planning and organising post accreditation activities in the government degree colleges.
