Hyderabad: In an attempt to do away with agents and brokers, the Transport department authorities are contemplating making registration of vehicles at the showroom itself. According to officials, the department is planning to shift the entire process of registration to the automobile showroom.

Normally, when a vehicle is purchased its owner is given a temporary registration number from the showroom. The owner then would have to go to RTA office to obtain permanent registration number.

The RTA officer would inspect the vehicle and issue certificate of registration once he satisfies himself that everything is in order. Here, the vehicle owners shell out more money to the broker for getting his work done. To avoid this, the department is now contemplating shifting the process to the showroom and this would benefit the motorist as there would be no involvement of middlemen, said a senior official in the department.

The official said that the Motor Vehicle Inspector would examine the documents, invoices, form 21 and 22, engine and chassis number at the showroom itself. The vehicle owners would have to go through the photograph and digital signature process in the showroom. The registration number would be granted by the RTA offices concerned, said the official.

Sources in the department said that agents and brokers collect Rs 4,500 for a four-wheeler and Rs 1,500 for a two-wheeler, which includes RTA charges. With this the new system, the broker would be eliminated, and the services would be directly provided to the motorist, said the official.

The officials propose to start the service on trial basis in RTA offices like Khairatabad, Mehdipatnam, Moosarambagh, Bandlaguda and Trimulgherry. This system is already in operation Andhra Pradesh and in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Thiruvananthapuram.

Joint Transport Commissioner J Pandurang Naik said that the department was working on the modalities. There are 150 dealers in Hyderabad and we need to see how the system can function. A team of officials would visit the states where the system is in place and replicate that in the state and particularly in the city to begin with.

As regards purchase of a used vehicle, the existing practice of seller and buyer visiting the RTA office for transfer of ownership will continue.
