Telangana DGP-in-charge (Director General of Police) M Mahender Reddy has been appointed as regular head of the state police.  Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Monday signed the file pertaining to Reddy’s appointment as fulltime DGP.

Hyderabad: Telangana DGP-in-charge (Director General of Police) M Mahender Reddy has been appointed as regular head of the state police. Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Monday signed the file pertaining to Reddy’s appointment as fulltime DGP.The state legislature recently passed an Act enabling the state government to appoint its DGP. Reddy has been the in charge DGP since November 12 last year.

Prior to his appointment as in-charge DGP, Reddy was the Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad. Mahender Reddy, a native of Khammam, completed his Bachelor of Technology (B Tech) in Civil Engineering in 1984 from the then REC, Warangal (now known as NIT, Warangal). He later did M Tech in Systems and Management at IIT, Delhi. In 1986, he was selected to IPS. He served in Karimnagar, Guntur, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Kurnool and Hyderabad in various capacities.

Now that an Act was passed in the Assembly, the state now has the authority to choose its DGP. Exercising these powers, the state government has confirmed Mahender Reddy in his present position.

Earlier practice was to send names of those who are of the DG rank to the UPSC, which would short list three names and send them back to the state to choose one among them for the top post.
