Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in Suryapet formally launched the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious project 'Prime Minister Ujjwala Yojana' (PMUY) to provide free LPG connections to poor women on Saturday.

After launching the scheme, the Minister handed over a few free LPG connections to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.

A large number of BJP leaders and cadres, including the party's state unit president K Laxman and BJP floor leader in the Assembly G Kishen Reddy, were seen in attendance.

According to the reports, 94.36 lakh people have LPG connections in the state so far and nearly 20 lakh families in Telangana will get free LPG connections starting from April 14.

More than five crore families stand to benefit from the scheme for which the Centre had allocated Rs 8,000 crore.
