Hyderabad: The actor-turned politician Pawan Kalyan on Saturday demanded harsher punishment to rapists to deter them from indulging in such crimes.

Speaking at his party office with members of women’s wing, he felt that 8-year-old Asifa’s rape and murder in Jammu & Kashmir has proved once again that the safety of women was abysmal in the Indian society. He noted that even in the broad day light, women were not safe.

The public representatives in Delhi reacted when they saw cases like Nirbhaya in the nation’s capital, when women continue to be vulnerable in other places. He proposed public caning of the accused should be introduced to deter any rapists in future. “Only Singapore-style caning can instill fear in these monsters.

A judge recently opined that castration of genitals should be the punishment for rapists. But Jana Sena proposes public caning instead. Only public humiliation can change these lecherous men,” he opined.

His party also organised a silent protest at Indira Gandhi statue on Necklace Road demanding stringent laws to be made to protect women and give harsher punishment to the culprits.

The actor did not agree with the view of some people that crimes against women have increased due to the influence of films. “Was the rape and murder of minor girl in Kathua was inspired by cinema and artistes?” he asked.
