Hyderabad: The Kaleshwaram project taken up by State is set to quench the thirst of one crore Hyderabad people this year. Works at Kondapochampally and Komaravelli Mallanna Sagar reservoirs were taken up on war footing. The ongoing Yellampally works were already at completion stage. Once all the works completed, river Godavari water will be supplied to the city regularly to meet drinking water needs even during summer.

The officials said that the city was already getting Godavari water for drinking purpose. The completion of Yellampally project will help to supply 20 TMC of water to the city for domestic needs. The project is likely to be completed before the beginning of the rainy season this year. Works between Yellampally, Mid Manair and two reservoirs are in full swing. Kondapochampally and Mallanna Sagar reservoirs will help to store water pumped from Yellampally and utilise the same for the drinking purpose during summer in the city.

Once the whole project is completed, officials said the entire city will get Godavari water and the demand for river Krishna water for drinking purpose will be reduced. Due to fall in water levels in Sagar reservoir under river Krishna in every summer, Hyderabad has been facing acute drinking water shortage.

The officials said the works at Medigadda, Annaram, Sundilla and Tummidi-Hatti were going on fast pace. The contract agency is seriously planning to create a world record in the construction of the project. Efforts were underway to beat the record set by a construction company which used 21,589 cubic metres of concrete material to construct a multi storied building in Dubai recently.

The agency was taking up 7,000 cubic metres of concrete work at every project site a day. The whole Kaleshwaram project is covering nine out of 10 old districts of the State to fetch drinking and irrigation water needs.

The left over old Mahbubnagar district will also be provided Godavari water and plans are underway to extend the project benefit to the drought-affected district.
