Hyderabad: In a shocking incident, a 48-year-old man sleeping on a footpath was crushed to death by a speeding car driven by a drunk engineering student at DAE Colony near ECIL under the limits of Kushaiguda police station, on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

The driver of the car, who was in an inebriated state, has been identified as Ishaniya Reddy (20), a B Tech student and a resident of Tarnaka. She, along with three other friends, was driving towards Tarnaka from AS Rao Nagar. The incident took place at around 12:30 am.

The deceased identified as A Ashok Kumar, a cobbler. He slept in front of his shop, like any other day, sources said. The car rammed on to a footpath and halted after collapsing a wall of DAE Colony before it crushed the victim. The driver and other girls tried to flee off from the crime scene after the accident, but the locals reportedly restrained them and called the police. They were reportedly shifted to women’s police station.

In a video recorded by the locals immediately after the accident showed that locals alleging all the four girls were highly drunk and demanded to bring breath analyser device to conduct the test, which police failed to do. “The case can be diverted once it reaches the police station,” a youth heard saying.

Meanwhile, the Kushaiguda police disputed that the driver was drunk and agreed upon other girls were in the inebriated state. “In the breath analyser test, it was declared that the driver did not consume alcohol.

The accident has happened in unavoidable circumstances,” said N Venkata Ramana, Inspector, Kushaiguda. “We have registered a case against the driver under 304 (A) IPC, and produced before the court,” he added. According to police, the four girls were the students of Sri Nidhi Engineering College, Ghatkesar.
