​Hyderabad: The National Council of Rural Institutes (NCRI) Chairperson Dr W G Prasanna Kumar said the NCRI had launched rural internship programme for a period of two months to the students of higher educational institutions in the country. Addressing the media here on Saturday, he said that students pursuing post graduation in the universities across the country get an opportunity to be NCRI intern, through guiding, mentoring and visiting the field.

The whole objective of this exercise is to enable students to explore rural landscape and get a feel of what real-time rural India looks like. During the course of the internship, they will have pre and post internship interaction component at the NCRI in Hyderabad. As part of this, 230 applicants from 36 institutions from 21 States across the country applied for the NCRI internships for Rural Community Engagement (RCE) and 60 students were short-listed.

The two-month tenure of the community engagement will start in May-June 2018. Out of the 60 students who were selected, the first batch of 30 students has completed its orientation for the rural internship now. The next batch would attend similar orientation towards the end of May 2018, he said.

The present batch of students from different States visited five villages around Pochampally and got first-hand exposure to living and working in villages, studying and understanding the villages’ social, economic and ecological structure.

The students from different streams like BTech, post-graduation in Environmental Science, Botany, Social Work, Anthropology, Rural Development and allied disciplines have been selected for this internship of two months with a stipend of Rs 10,000 per month.

Dr Prasanna Kumar said the short stint of rural exposure is expected to be a stepping stone and an eye opener for many aspiring students who would like to involve themselves in a career that embraces rural engagement. During the span of the two-month internship of training and orientation, students will cover various aspects of villages like the formation of groups and buddy system.

Participatory Rural Appraisal on select aspects of the village, networks and groups, important achievers, , important aspects, challenges, excellent responses to these challenges from the village, entrepreneurship, communication, teachers, schools and education in the village, health, health centre and health issues and collection of information using questionnaires will be involved.

That apart, the interns will also come up with important learnings from the village, photography and documentation of village life and livelihoods, important quotes and stories from the village with daily dairy maintenance, timelines, and end programme report followed by certification.
