Hyderabad: Speakers at a roundtable conference on 'Raising Sexual Abuse and Remedies' opined that moral and sex education should be made compulsory in educational institutions in a bid to sensitise and raise awareness on child sex abuse. The conference was organised by Balala Hakkula Sangham (BHS), a child rights organisation, and Youth for Better India (YBI) here on Thursday. The activists demanded for a child-friendly special police stations for handling child sexual abuse cases.

Capital punishment will not deter violence against child sexual abuse, the government and civil society should think of other ways for the prevention of crimes against children, majority of the speakers said. Crimes against children are on a rise year by year, said an activist quoting the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics, “In 2014, there were 89,423 cases reported and the count had been raised to 94,172 in 2015, and 1.069 lakh cases in 2016,” said BHS honorary president Achyuta Rao.

“Current laws and policies focus more on the handling of reported sexual violence, and do not focus on mechanisms to prevent them. More effective policies are needed to prevent sexual violence,” Achyuta Rao said. Child sex abuse has a clear nexus with lack of sex education and taboos around it at an early age, he pointed out. “Many times, children do not realise what is happening with them, it dawns on them much later in life,” he added.
