Hyderabad: The defeat of the Congress in the recently held Assembly elections in Karnataka made the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leaders urge Chief Minister and TRS party chief K Chandrashekar Rao to restructure the party.

According to sources, some of the leaders urged that the TRS chief restructure the party. The leaders pointed out that the party cannot depend solely on the government schemes and there should be a network for the party to connect the higher level to the grass root level in order to take the message to masses.

Sources said that the leaders brought to the notice of the Chief Minister that there was not very strong anti-incumbency against Siddaramaiah government in Karnataka and schemes were good enough to win elections but still the party had to suffer defeat.

On the other hand, the leaders pointed out that there was no chance for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the early campaign days but later on it picked up pace and it was because of the strong network of the party till the booth level. “The Congress was strong enough but the BJP’s strategy of ‘Panna Pramukh’ (booth level activists) ensured the voters get influenced with their version,” said a senior TRS leader. The BJP became single largest party in Karnataka with 104 seats and Congress could secure 78 seats after doing all the good work, added the TRS leader.

The TRS leaders wanted similar set up in the State to counter the Opposition parties during the next elections. The Chief Minister had been saying that there was no need for a traditional structure and entrusted the responsibility of the party to the MLAs and party in-charges. The leaders wanted State, District, Constituency wise committees so that the leaders would feel that there is some responsibility on them.

The Chief Minister had not talked about the party even during the plenary held in April. The focus was on the welfare activities done by the government and on the Federal Front of the Chief Minister, who aspires to bring qualitative change in politics. The leaders now have decided to convince their party chief for restructuring the party since there is one-year time left for the next elections.
