Hyderabad: Motorists driving on 158-km Outer Ring Road (ORR), an eight-lane expressway encircling Hyderabad, will soon get timely medical aid during accidents or health emergencies like heart attacks while on the move if things fall in place. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and the Department of Health, Medical and Family Welfare are jointly working on setting up of trauma care centres at certain distance each to extend medical aid to commuters using ORR.

It may be noted that with vehicles going at high speeds regularly on ORR, several accidents are taking place and people are receiving grievous injuries. In many cases, accidents result in loss of lives due to lack of instant medical attention. If attended during ‘golden hour’, also known as ‘golden time’ among medical fraternity, chances of death could be minimized.

‘Golden hour’ is the period of time following a critical injury when if prompt medical and surgical treatment is given, the victims’ lives can be saved. The State authorities are focusing on this aspect. MA&UD (Municipal Administration & Urban Development) Minister K T Rama Rao directed the HMDA and the Health Department to work in partnership for establishing trauma care centres on ORR.

It may be mentioned here that the metropolitan body constructed infrastructure at 11 of the 19 interchanges on ORR for toll collection, call centre etc. In each of these buildings, one room (15 ft x 9 ft) has been kept vacant for the purpose of extending medical assistance to those who need it while travelling on ORR. The metropolitan body wants the Health Department to depute some staff and life support equipment to extend medical aid.

Other than these, the HMDA is planning to construct wayside amenities (each one to have petrol bunk, vehicle service station, food courts, bio-toilets and electric charging points) at a few locations on ORR. It is planning to build one trauma care centre at each wayside amenities location.

Shamshabad, Patancheru, Ghatkesar, Peddamberpet and Medchal are some of the locations on ORR that witness heavy rush of vehicles every day.

Meanwhile, the Health Department is on the job of setting up trauma care centres on ORR and also on National Highways and State Highways in a few districts in the State. When contacted, a senior official of Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad Dr Ashok said they had sent proposals to the government in this connection. They said each centre (of at least 1000 sq feet) would have ICU like set-up along with five-bed facility, specialist doctors from Ortho, Nuero, Pulmonology etc.

streams, support staff, drugs, ventilators and surgical equipment. “The intention is to give medical aid during golden hour so that survival rate increases. The vitals like BP, pulse and heart rate could be checked and ensured patient condition improves,” said Dr Ashok.
