Hyderabad: On the lines of developed European nations, Telangana state government is set to adopt AI (artificial intelligence) technology in delivering citizen services in all important departments in a phased manner. As a first, the AI technology will be introduced in the Transport department.

The Transport department aims to reduce human role in delivering services offered by the government in a more transparent way. State Information Technology department has been entrusted to take up a pilot project on using artificial intelligence in the Transport department.

In the recent months, AI technology has been the buzzword in US, Germany, Canada and UK where the respective governments adopted the new technology to reduce human interference in delivering services. These countries were already using artificial intelligence for traffic management round-the-clock.

The emerging technology was also being used in delivering services to the local citizens mainly in the issuance of driving licences, registration of vehicles and other citizen centric services.

An official of State IT department said that the government is busy preparing an AI programme to be taken up on experimental basis in one or two months at a selected RTA office in the state. The new software programme using AI will be applied first to address the grievances and queries posted by people on online. The programme will be developed with the intervention of some top-notch IT companies engaged in scripting a programme using artificial intelligence.

For instance, the official said that the AI technology will clarify the doubts raised by people on the issuance of driving licences, issues related to vehicle registrations and renewal of licences online directly. The queries could be asked either by voice message or text.

Soon after complainant posts a query, the department through AI technology will clarify the doubts within no time. The IT department was already holding consultations with the experts in the field of artificial intelligence on the specific project.

It may be mentioned here that State IT Minister KT Rama during his recent address at the World Economic Forum held in Switzerland stressed the need to adopt AI technology in the government services to derive accurate results.

The state government has already partnered with IT industry body Nasscom to set up a Centre of Excellence for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence with any investment of Rs 40 crore. The IT department will seek the help of Nasscom in creating the AI technology.
