Mahbubnagar: With the green cover dwindling fast, wildlife in Atmakur mandal of Wanaparthy district are in peril. Peacocks seem to be the worst hit as their number has been reduced drastically in the recent times.

Consequently, a large number of peacocks has been straying into human habitations and even entering into houses in search of food. The people of Atmakur mandal are witnessing flocks of peacocks coming and making their homes on the trees at the Venkateshwara Temple in the town.

“Of late, we are witnessing more and more peacocks coming and making their homes on the trees near Venkateshwara temple. We have even caught hold of one of the peacocks when it entered into a house and later handed it over to the police,” said the youth of Rajaveedhi Colony in Atmakur.

Peacock is regarded as the national bird and the Forest department is taking no initiative to rescue them and provide them better habitations, allege the locals. As there is growing number of peacocks venturing into human habitations, the villagers are demanding that the forest officials must take steps to rescue the national birds.
