Jangaon: The police apprehended a man for marrying a minor girl in a ceremony that took place at Devaruppula in the district. The police, here on Tuesday said that a 17-year-old girl was married to a 28-year-old man during wee hours on June 22. On learning about the incident, the district welfare officer B Padmaja Ramana lodged a complaint with the police. The man was identified as Ashok.

Based on a complaint, the minor girl was rescued, and a case was registered under relevant sections of Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 against Ashok and his parents, parents of the girl and the priest who performed the marriage, said Wardhannapet ACP A Madhusudan.

Ashok happens to be a relative of the girl and was already married. After his first wife deserted him, he married the minor girl, the police official said. He refuted the allegations that the police failed to prevent the minor girl’s marriage. Ashok’s parents were also taken into custody.

According to the ACP, the parents of the girl showed her as a major based on the birthdate mentioned in her Aadhaar card. When her 10th class certificates were verified she was found to be 17-year-old.

The district welfare officer Padmaja Ramana told The Hans India that the girl was in the women and children welfare office now and would be handed over to her parents soon.
