Hyderabad: The Directorate of Enforcement, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has taken up drive to clear all the encroachments on footpaths.

Several times the High Court has given directions to remove the encroachments on footpaths and though drives have been conducted, the results were not up to expectations. Keeping in view of the importance of the directions of the High Court the Directorate of Enforcement, Vigilance and Disaster Management of GHMC (EV and DM), has been planning to take up a special drive and the main aim of the drive is ‘Right to Walk’ on footpaths for the convenience of the pedestrians said Viswajit Kampati, GHMC (EV and DM).

The directorate will deploy six special teams for the purpose involving officers, workers with modernised equipments, JCBs, debris removal vehicles to remove footpath encroachments in coordination with Traffic and Law and Order police officials.

About 48 stretches are being taken up in the first phase in which each team will be allotted eight stretches. Some of the teams were already on the sites, directing the encroachers to remove voluntarily before the drive begins, if not, the special teams will remove them immediately from June 30, without issuing any notice under section 405 of Act provision of the GHMC.

The drive will not initiate action against the small vendors who are doing business. Meanwhile, the GHMC’s Urban Community Development (UCD) Wing is identifying some of the places for small vendors to do their business in allotted area without giving any scope of traffic congestion at the places where the traffic flow has been very high.

A meeting with Traffic, Law and Order police officials had been conducted on Thursday and it has been decided that the police officials are making announcements at the sites to remove them voluntarily. At the first instance the GHMC will not penalise them but during the drive if anybody opposes or after drive if anybody found encroaching again severe action will be taken against them by booking criminal cases, posing penalties, cancelling the trade licence to curb this menace.
