Tank Bund: On the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, a 2k Awareness Run was organised by Indian Psychiatric Society and Hyderabad Psychiatric Society at Jalavihar on Sunday. The 2K Run was held to create awareness that ‘suicide is a preventable psychiatric health issue’ by the members of Psychiatric Society. And yet it is a major issue in India leading to over 1,35,000 deaths with an inclining number in south India.

Psychiatrists said, “Suicide has become very common with troubled students, distressed women, frustrated youth and drug addicts, it usually happens in a sense of hopelessness. Major cause is depression, which is very much treatable.” There exists a ‘bio-psycho-social module for its cause. It is highly needed to spread awareness about prevention of suicide.

Additional Commissioner of Police, T Murali Krishna was invited as a chief guest. Chandrasekhar, chairman, Telangana Private Psychiatric Hospitals, Dr M Umashankar, superintendent of Institute of Mental Health, Dr Keshav Rao, Telangana president of Indian Psychiatric Society, Dr V George Reddy, general secretary of Indian Psychiatric Society and Dr Gangaram, President of Hyderabad Psychiatric Society participated in the run.
