Hyderabad: Activists from Muslim community are yet to come to terms with the surprise move by Caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who dissolved the Assembly earlier this month. Some of them strongly condemned the decision and described it to be an opportunistic behaviour, while others continue to hold dharnas with demands like 12 per cent reservation. Unable to comprehend the fast moving developments, some are resorting to holding demonstrations at the Government offices. Even though the major policy decision can only be made in the Assembly these organisations are continuing to argue about unfulfilled promises.

Social organisation Awaaz held a demonstration in front of Haj House on Wednesday with the demands like 12 per cent reservation (one of the election promises of K Chandrashekar Rao in 2014), double bedroom for poor Muslims, ordering of CBI inquiry into the encroachment of Wakf lands and increase of pay hike for Urdu Academy employees amongst others. “We demand that K Chandrashekar Rao first fulfil his promises including Budget Subplan, employment opportunities to youth and direct loans to small businessmen. He betrayed the Muslims by not fulfilling his election promises and resorted to dissolution of the Assembly,” Awaaz general secretary Md Abbas said.

He recalled that the promises of providing loans turned farce after the TS Minority Finance Corporation accepted 1,84,000 applications for the financial year 2015-16, but ended up by providing loans to only 8,000. He questioned the seriousness of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which boasts of promoting Urdu, but could not reflect this while implementing the Minimum Wages norm to 177 of the employees working for Urdu Academy. Meanwhile, some other activists representing SC,ST,BC, Muslim Front described the Chandrashekar Rao’s decision as an opportunistic one, as he dissolved the Assembly overnight, without fulfilling the promises made in 2014.

Front’s chief convenor Sanaulla Khan felt that K Chandrashekar Rao deceived the people of Telangana by dissolving assembly eight months before its full term to avoid the questions of people about the fulfilment of electoral promises. “Chandrashekar Rao is a skilful liar as he just made hollow promises about reservation to minorities, dalilts and other backward classes,” said Sanaulla Khan.

While others felt that the decision to hike honorarium of Imam and Mouzzin, a few days prior to the announcement speaks volumes of the intention of Chandrashekar Rao, as this hike would mean indirect control over mosques prior to elections. “Considering the financial advantage, the priests are indirectly being discouraged from speaking anything critical of the government policies. This kind of perk appears to be suppressing any voices of dissidence,” Ilyas Shamshi of Reformers Front of India said.
