Hyderabad: The city police on Saturday launched a specialised wing City Rapid Action Force (CRAF) created to deal with riots, riot like situations, crowd control, rescue and relief operations, and related unrest.
It was launched and inaugurated by City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar at a launch programme which was presided over by Additional Commissioner of Police M Shiva Prasad at the City Police Headquarters. A mock drill to control riots, using different methods like warning, tear gas, water cannon, lathi-charge and mounted police using batons was performed on the occasion.
The Commissioner of Police in his address elaborated on the vision of the Police department in making Hyderabad a Safe and Smart city.
He emphasised on creating a partnership between police and the public through community policing for building a safe, secure and stable society. The Commissioner also interacted with the CRAF teams and explained them about their designated duties.
Anil Kumar, Additional CP (Traffic), Shika Goel, Additional CP (Crimes), D S Chauhan, Additional CP (Law & Order) and T Murali Krishna, Additional CP (Admin) Hyderabad together with all officials attended the launch programme.
According to officials, young personnel with quick reflexes, maturity and un-biased views were selected to form the wing. They have a distinctive uniform and have to act in zero response time. The force currently has 40 personnel (20 male and 20 female) specialised trained officers of the rank of Police Constables.
Motto of the wing is ‘Serving Humanity with Sensitive Policing.’ This force is equipped with non-lethal weapons for dispersing the crowd with minimum harm and losses. The CRAF are kept always in readiness for rapid deployment when situation so demands. CRAF will be deployed only by the orders of the Commissioner of Police on specific duties only and are normally not deployed for long duration.
This unit will be used to deal with communal violence, law and order duties, festival and election duties and agitations. CRAF will be projected as a human face of Hyderabad City Police to build a bridge with the public by carrying out prompt rescue and relief operations as and when required.
