Literature award named after Nizam

Hyderabad: The grandson of Mir Osman Ali Khan (Nizam VII), Najaf Ali Khan, has welcomed the initiative of Urdu Academy of announcing a cash award of Rs 5 lakh for literature and naming it after the last Nizam. Speaking to The Hans India, Najaf Ali felt that the decision of this kind of an award would be a true tribute to Mir Osman Ali Khan. “I am grateful to Raheemuddin Ansari, chairman of Urdu Academy, for taking such a decision,” he said.

The academy is also planning to come up with a 1,000-page book highlighting the life and achievements of Mir Osman Ali Khan (Nizam VII) to let the younger generations know about his rule, which is considered to be a great era, from 1911 to 1948, that focused on developmental activities, culture and academics. “At least some recognition is finally given to him after 51 years. He had done a great service to humanity, irrespective of their caste, creed and religion. His services were not limited to the state, and he will be remembered for the services forever,” he said.

The British gave him the title of H.E.H. for his leadership qualities, and the Indian Government appointed him as Rajpramukh of the state in 1948, the Grandson of VII Nizam recalled. He held the administrative title till 1956 and voluntarily resigned, he added. “When he died, an official gazette was issued by the State government in his name. We demand more such awards in the name of my grandfather for his innumerable contributions to Hyderabad in the fields of education and health,” he added.
