Hyderabad: Several senior Congress leaders from the State met the AICC screening committee on Friday and expressed their views on seat sharing in the alliance and selection of candidates for the party.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) working president A Revanth Reddy, former MLA DK Aruna, Campaign Committee chairman M Bhatti Vikramarka, AICC official spokesperson S Jaipal Reddy and former MLA G Venkata Ramana Reddy met the screening committee members.

Chairman of the committee Bhaktha Charan Das discussed the seat sharing and selection of candidates’ issue with the senior leaders. They heard the opinions of the leaders on the third day as part of their exercise on selection of candidates.

The screening committee is in Hyderabad primarily to select the candidates of the party for the next elections. It received the list prepared by the Pradesh Election Committee with one or more names for each constituency.

The committee held discussions with the district leaders of Congress on Thursday. It had elicited their opinions on the recommendations being made by the PEC and also cross checked the reports of the surveys.

Screening committee would leave for Delhi on Saturday and it would submit its recommendations to the core committee of the AICC headed by AK Antony. The core committee would examine the recommendations of the screening committee and finalise the list of candidates.

Sources in the party said that the AICC would announce the first list of the Congress on October 16 and would announce rest of the names after finalising the seat sharing with the alliance partners. The screening committee would also recommend the number of seats to the alliance partners with the feedback it received from the surveys, discussions with the district leaders and the senior leaders.

Party leaders said that the screening committee has put focus on the winning chances of the candidates. It has taken the view of the district and senior leaders of the party on the best candidates. It inquired with the State and district leaders about the prevailing political conditions in each Assembly constituency and sought their opinion on the best candidate to be fielded.

The leaders said that this time the high command was quite serious on selection of candidates and did not want to leave anything to chance. The qualification of the candidates for selection would be examined on terms of their popularity among the voters, their performance in the previous elections, their loyalty towards the party and their financial position.

They said that the high command is of the view that the political conditions in the State were quite positive for the Congress and it has to be careful in fielding the candidates.
