Barkas: Once raised as a pavilion at Maisaram area, in old city, the city’s Grandhalaya, “Barkas Library” presently stands as a living proof of administrative negligence. Inaugurated in 1966 by the then Home Minister Mir Ahmed Ali Khan, the 52-year-old structure is now reeling under pathetic condition due to poor maintenance. The library looks as if it won’t last even a single blow with a sledgehammer.
“The library, once used by a large number of local students, has now turned into a deserted structure, facilitating the unsocial elements to venture in for booze and bash at late hours. Stray animals take naps in the day time,” says Saber Bin Awn Barrawaz, Vice Chairman at Congress Minority Department, Chandrayangutta Assembly Constituency. The old structure of the library is in a dilapidated state and is crying out for immediate attention. Its old ceiling is sitting on the staggered pillars of the structure. Cracks appear on the walls all the way from ceiling to floor. Tiny bushes have formed on the parapet walls, making them feeble to stand concrete.
Officials seem to be least bothered of perform their duties until someone else turn their attention towards the issue. “How can the literacy rate improve if the libraries in the localities are thrown out into deserted looks?” he asked. Slamming the officials for deliberately neglecting the only library of the area, which is also known as bastion of Arab community, Saber Bin Awn Barrawaz said, “Since many years we are witnessing the same condition here.
There is no proper supervision and maintenance of the building, let alone the renovation of the structure for the sake of local students. People who blow off steam in the public meeting and audaciously claim to be the well-wishers of Muslims are actually turning blind eye on improving literacy rate within the community by providing facilities like libraries. Instead, they are paving way to close the only library in Barkas area by keeping mum over the real issues faced by the people.”
Poor Sanitation
At a single glance, one can easily assess that the library was left untouched for a long time and that there is no sanitation arrangement in place where students and educated people are frequents visitors.
