Hyderabad: All India Congress Committee (AICC) may take the opinions of newly elected MLAs of the party to select leader of the Legislature Party in Assembly. According to sources, the decision is likely to prevent any embarrassment due to division in the MLAs on the election.
As the government announced the schedule for the first session of the newly formed Assembly, the AICC would expedite election of leader of CLP. The sessions would begin on January 17. The Congress MLAs would have to elect their leader before the commencement of the first session of the Assembly to make allotment of seats to the members and for other purposes. The meeting of the CLP may be held on January 12 or 13.
The AICC would send its emissaries to oversee the election of the leader of the CLP when it meets. A senior leader of the party said that the AICC observers would take the opinion of the MLAs on electing the leader and would select one senior as leader. As per sources, TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy and former working president M Bhatti Vikramarka are competing for the post. Both have been trying to occupy the position through their channels in the AICC.
Leader of the CLP is an important post as the one elected would become leader of the opposition. The LOP would have facilities of a Cabinet Minister and would have importance in the activities of the Assembly. The Congress has 19 members in the new Assembly and it is eligible to get the leader of the opposition post. With this Uttam and Bhatti are trying to lap up that post.
Supporters of Uttam Kumar Reddy said that he has fair chances of becoming leader of Congress Legislature Party as he has the blessing of the high command. On the other hand, followers of Bhatti Vikramarka said that their leader has the support of the few MLAs of the Congress and backing of few leaders of AICC. According to sources, Uttam had been seeking the leader of CLP post to run the party till the Parliament elections.
He wants to ensure win of maximum number of seats from the State. With this the legislature party is divided on the election of leader and if differences come to the fore it would become another embarrassment for it after losing the Assembly election. In order to avoid confrontation between Uttam and Bhatti, the AICC decided to enter into the scene of electing the leader of CLP.
The Assembly would meet on January 17 and election of the leader of CLP has to be completed a day before that. However, due to Sankranti festival from January 14, the Congress may opt to hold the meeting of the MLAs on January 12 or 13.
