Osmania University: A seminar on ‘Inter-caste marriages- Annihilation of caste’ was held at New Seminar Hall, Arts College, here on Friday as part of Arigey Ramaswamy Memorial Seminar.
The speakers opined that without the proper understanding of the caste system, caste cannot be annihilated completely from the society. One way to annihilate caste was by promoting the inter-caste marriages, speakers averred.
Honour killings and violence were observed mostly in the middle-class families, they observed. Most speakers felt that there was need to enlist civil societies support for inter-caste marriages and appealed to the governments to work for the same. Dr Gopani Chandranna was the coordinator at the seminar. A large number of university professors and students attended the seminar.
Several dalit and bahujan writers and academicians such as Usa Sambasiva Rao, Gogu Shyamala, Sangishetti Srinivas, Professor S Sujatha, Professor Chenna Basavaiah, Dr Venkatesh Naik, and OU student leaders N Sharath Kumar, Rajesh Kota and others participated in the seminar presided over by Professor Inukonda Thirumala. This seminar assumes importance in the light of several honour killings taking place in the state.
