Tandur: The single-line road between Lakshminarayanpur X Roads and Devanur Village that links the Tandur-Kodangal stretch, close to the Bengaluru National Highway, was split into two in 2018 at a cost of Rs 8 crore. The split proved to be useful for the vehicle riders. However, with the contractor not following the quality standards, the coal tar on either side of the new road near Bennur, Sangemkurdu and Yalala for a distance of 100-200 metres disappeared. Rollers were not used to crush small stones used in laying roads.
Also, the mix of concrete and tar was not laid properly. Besides, the mix brought from Vikarabad did not meet the required heat standards.The roads got damaged during rainy season, with water getting stagnated, and tar and stones emerging out. The poor maintenance of the roads only added to the woes of the vehicle-users. Hence, there is an urgent need for officials to become alert to the situation and take up the repair works.
With no repairs during the last six months, people have been facing daily hardships. Commuters are losing balance and falling off the vehicles frequently. Even drivers of heavy vehicles are having a tough time travelling. Requests to officials to repair the roads have fallen on deaf ears.
It may be recalled that till a decade ago, thousands of residents of Devanur, Gorepalli, Yalala, Sangemkurdu, Hajiur, Kishtapur, Govindraopet, Bennur and Amberpet villages used to travel on the single road to reach Tandur using two-wheelers, RTC buses, mini-lorries, trucks, cars, jeeps and autorickshaws in hundreds.
The old road had damaged because of a large number of vehicles traversing on it. The condition deteriorated with stones appearing, causing severe inconvenience to commuters. In order to resolve the situation, the State government decided to split the road and sanctioned Rs 8 crore for the purpose. The new road provided relief for time being to the residents.The officials of the engineering wing at R&B Department in Tandur told The Hans India that the issue of taking up road repairs has been taken to the notice of the contractor.
They stressed that it is his responsibility to rectify the damage caused to the road near the culverts. If he does not do it, the government will stop the payment. ‘A huge amount that needs to be paid to the contractor is still lying with the government.’ The officials said that if the contractor doesn’t take up the repair works within the stipulated time the department would itself do it.
