Mahbubnagar: Aiming to improve enrolment and at the same time provide English medium teaching to students on par with the private schools, the authorities of the School Education Department in Mahbubnagar have decided to introduce English medium teaching in all the government primary schools from the next academic year.

However, the district education department has realised that implementing English medium instruction in all the 969 government primary schools across the district would not a simple task and to overcome this arduous task, the district authorities have decided to provide training to all the secondary grade teachers (SGT) so that they could be able to handle classes.

As part of the initiative, the authorities concerned have recently signed an agreement with an NGO, Joly Phoenix Education Society, to provide training sessions to the SGT teachers. The NGO will provide basic training to all the SGT teachers in 969 government primary schools in the district.

In fact, before reaching at the decision of introducing English medium instruction in all government primary schools, the school education department authorities in Mahbubnagar had earlier conducted a pilot project and where in they selected a few government primary schools in the previous academic year and trained as many as 20 teachers from different schools in two phases.

Based on the final results of the pilot project, the authorities found that the idea of providing English medium teaching right from primary level was yielding good results as this strategy not only helped improve enrolment but also quality of teaching was remarkably improved.

Taking this forward, now the school education department officials have decided to train all the SGT teachers who will in turn teach about 24,000 primary school students in English medium and improve not only quality of teaching but also boost the enrolment rate in the government schools from the next academic year.

The NGO which had come forward to provide free of cost training to the teachers has also offered to provide free educational kits worth Rs 20,000 to each school, using which the teachers can teach the students through innovative teaching methods.
