Hyderabad/Amaravati: Major shrines in both the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana dedicated to Lord Shiva witnessed heavy rush of devotees on Monday on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri. Cutting across religious and gender barriers, devotees including women, children and elderly, thronged temples since early morning to take part in special pujas and rituals to mark the auspicious annual festival.
Long queues and heavy rush resulted in traffic snarls near many temples, including the famed Srisailam temple. Though elaborate arrangements were made, at one stage a mild stampede was witnessed at Srisailam temple when the chairman of the temple tried to take some VIPs along with him though there was a long queue.
RK Beach in Visakhapatnam came to life. The beach road brimmed with devotees who came to watch ‘Maha Kumbhabishekam’, using holy water sourced from various important rivers across the country, on the huge Shiva lingam set up with the collection of one crore and eight lakh small lingas.
All the temples were tastefully decorated and reverberated with the chanting of “Aum Namah Shivayah”. Abhisekhams, Kalyanams and special pujas were performed in all temples.
The popular Shiva temples at Srisailam, Draksharamam, Srikalahasti, Kotappakonda, Palakollu, Amaravati, Samarlakota, Bheemavaram and other temples in Andhra Pradesh and Shiva temples at Vemulawada, Keesara, Bala Brahmeshwara temple in Alampur, Komuravelli, Inavolu, Thousand-pillar temple, Ramappa temple and so on in Telangana state witnessed heavy rush.
Special pujas were performed at Sri Rajarajeshwara Swamy temple in Vemulawada of Rajanna- Sircilla district, Ramalingeshwara Swamy temple at Keesara, Kaleswaram and Cheruvughattu temple in Nalgonda district and temples in Panagal. Brahmotsavams of Sri Veerabhadra Swamy were performed in Kuravi, Komuravelli, Edupayala, Bowrapur in Nagarkurnool district. In Bhadrachalam, devotees in thousands thronged the Atma Lingeshwara Swamy temple in Palwancha to witness the Sun rays touching Shiva Linga.
Similarly, Shiva temples in Khammam, Suryapet, Nirmal, Mancherial, Nalgonda, Jayashankar Bhupalapalli districts, Jangaon, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy, devotees performed special pujas amidst chanting of “Aum Namah Shivaya”.
Minister A Indrakaran Reddy performed special pujas at Sri Rajarajeshwara Swamy temple at Vemulawada and presented silk vastrams. A delegation of priests from the Tirumala- Tirupati Devasthanams visited Sri Rajarajeswara Swamy temple and presented “Pattu Vastrams” to Lord Shiva.
