Hyderabad: There has been a spurt of dehydration cases in the city in the last week. People have been thronging Fever Hospital and other hospitals complaining of fatigue.

Dr K Govind Narsing Rao, Professor at Mediciti Institute of Medical Sciences, Ghanpur, says, “One should consume 8-10 glasses of water and you can also mix a tsp of lemon juice in it that will replenish and give you instant energy. Have lots of fluids even when you’re not thirsty and as it is helpful to keep your body hydrated.” Doctors also advise children not to get exposed to direct sun and avoid fried food, cut fruit exposed and cold drinks from outside, as water-borne diseases are very common in summer. Only filtered water, homemade juices, and home cooked food is best during the summer. One should try to wear soft, light colors and comfortable cloth.

Light, healthy meals
Start your early morning with a fresh homemade fruits juice, coconut water, and buttermilk and try to have seasonal fruits like melon, dates and citrus fruits. Also, try to include fresh salad and green leafy veggies. Avoid caffeine, alcohol or excessive tea as they tend to dehydrate your body.

Aged shall take precautions
Dr Navodaya, Consultant physician, Care Banjara, says dehydration is a major concern for senior citizens in the summer and to beat the heat they should drink plenty of fluids. They should prefer to stay indoors during the summer to avoid sunstroke. Dr Goverdhan, senior physician, Care Hospital, Nampally, draws attention to heat rash as being a major concern during summer and says this can be avoided by wearing clean and dried cloth, take a cool shower to stay fresh and also avoid strenuous exercise.

Dr Ather Pasha, general physician, Care Hospital, Banjara Hills, says the onset of summer requires planning for a proper healthy diet, and adequate intake of fluid and proper lifestyle.

He also says that if the stage of dehydration level is critical, one should take medical advice and if required get administered intravenous dihedral fluids to prevent critical conditions.

It is essential prevent excessive dehydration which can lead to kidney failure and also, sometimes, can prove fatal, warn the medical community.
