Luxettipeta: A paddy farmer set fire to his dried-up paddy crop in about six acres as the crop was entirely damaged by brown planthopper. The pest shattered the dreams of the farmer of reaping a bumper harvest. The farmer, Saram Madhukar of Chandaram village, had no alternate except to burn the damaged crop to prevent the pest from spreading to the crops in neighboring fields.

His farm was lush green with good prospects of the yield until the brown planthopper attacked it. When Madhukar found out the pest spreading to three acres of paddy crop, he spent Rs 1.50 lakh for applying pesticides in his six acres. But of no use. He was about to harvest the crop in a few days when the pest attacked the crops. Since he sprayed the pesticides in the last phase, the grains were not fit for consumption.
