Warangal: Rich tributes were paid to social activist and reformer Jyothirao Phule on his 187th birth anniversary celebrations in Hanamkonda on Thursday.

Scores of political leaders led by Warangal MP Sircilla Rajaiah, Congress leader Tadishetty Vidyasagar, Bawaraju Sriman, Banda Prakash, Sambari Samma Rao, Additional JC Sanjivaiah and others garlanded the statue of Jyothirao Phule in Hanamkonda.

In a related programme, birth anniversary celebrations were held at Kareemabad in Warangal under the auspices of A P Ambedkar Youth Association.

Speaking on the occasion, one of its advisers Bommala Kattaiah said that Jyothirao Phule did yeoman service to the backward and downtrodden sections of the population. He asked all the downtrodden youth to be united and work for their welfare. He said that Phule participated in the peasants' movement in Maharashtra.

Buddhist Society of India (BSI) district president N Sudarshan said that Phule and Ambedkar statues should be installed in prime Kareemabad area and urged the people's cooperation in this regard. He said that Phule along with his wife worked for the uplift of widows and poor.

Nagapuri Venkataswamy and Sanjay Babu, speaking on the occasion, assured all help in uplifting the local backward sections. They donated stationery to the 80 students belonging to weaker sections.A B Ambedkar, Enamalla Cheralu, T Rajamani, S Subadra, Narsimha Rao and others participated.

Khammam: Minister for Horticulture Ramreddy Venkatreddy, accompanied by District Collector Siddarth Jain and other leaders and officials, unveiled the statue of Mahatma Jyothirao Phule at Bypass Road in Khammam on Thursday on the occasion of the 187th birth anniversary of the social reformer.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister lauded the services of the veteran social activist to the people belonging to SC, ST and BC communities. Phule strove for providing to education to women and people of weaker sections in the society. He also encouraged widow marriages. He asked the people of downtrodden sections to be united and fight for their rights.

Joint Collector Surendra Mohan, Municipal Commissioner Srinivasa Rao and others were present.
