Warangal: Rich tributes were paid to social reformer and architect of Indian Constitution Dr B R Ambedkar on the occasion of his 123rd birthday here on Sunday.A BC Welfare Minister B Saraiah, TDP leader K Srihari, the leaders of various political parties and government officials offered floral tributes at the statue of Ambedkar at Ambedkar Circle.
Various programmes by government and non-government organisations were held to mark the occasion. Speaking at a programme at Charbowli in Warangal Minister B Saraiah said the state government has been committed for the uplift of the downtrodden. "Andhra Pradesh is the only state in the country to introduce 'SC, ST Sub-Plans Bill 2012' providing statutory status for the implementation of the sub-plans for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes," he said.
At another programme at Ambedkar Bhavan organised by the district Social Welfare Department, Warangal MP, S Rajaiah has appealed the state government to announce a special package to SC/STs. Warangal (West) MLA D Viany Bhasker has said that Ambedkar should not be limited to a single community, caste or religion.
In-charge collector PS Pradyumna addressing the gathering called upon the Dalit associations to focus on resolving land issues related to Dalits. Warangal Municipal Commissioner Vivek Yadav, additional joint collector B Sanjeevaiah, social welfare department official Rama Devi, MRPS leader Manda Kumar Madiga, DRDA project director Vijay Gopal and others took part in the programme.
A programme at CPI (M) office was held where the party district secretary G Nagaiah and others paid tributes to Dr Ambedkar. A Kakatiya University vice-chancellor Prof. B Venkat Rathnam at a programme on the university campus has stressed on the need to spread the ideals and principles preached by Ambekdar. Registrar Prof. K Sayulu, the university SC/ST wing director M Tirumala Devi and others were present.
At AP Northern Power Distribution Company of Limited corporate office, chairman and managing director of the company Kartikeya Misra described Ambedkar as great social reformer who fought for equality in the society.
