Depression can mean different things to different people. The way one perceives depression defines the extent to which he/she may be affected by it. For women, depression is complicated by several different factors—from internal hormones to external social pressures. It is important to understand that depression can impact every area of a woman’s life including physical health, social life, relationships, career and so on.

According to the National Mental Health Association, about one in every eight women will experience depression symptoms at some point during their lifetime. But we must do well to remember that ‘a depressed state of mind’ is curable. It starts by identifying the symptoms that one experiences.

Talking about depression, Cilarapu Srija, a student, says, “When you're depressed you don't control your thoughts, but your thoughts control you. Depression isn't always at 3 am, sometimes it's breaking down at 3 pm. The best way to come out of depression is to talk about it to people whom you trust and believe. And most importantly give enough time for self-nurturing.”

What do you do when you feel blue?
You can make a huge recovery from your depression by making a few simple changes in life. No matter how bleak things seem, there’s a lot you can do to change the way you think and feel. It is not very easy to ‘snap out of it’ immediately, but you do have more control than you realise. By taking small but important steps, you can start to feel better and regain your drive, your sense of hope, and your enjoyment in life.

“Feeling alone, frustrated and vexed? Have you ever gone through these feelings? I have!
These distressing emotions hit us at some point in our lives, it may be because of various reasons, but at the end how we deal with it is what matters the most. I usually take long walks, listen to music and spend time with my near and dear. This is how I self-medicate” says, Akhila Penmatsa, an employee.

It must be borne in the mind that ‘Depression is also an expression’ and how well you take control of this ‘expression’ depends on ‘self’!
