The recent sensational comment of the film actress, model, Sri Reddy, with regards to casting couch has again raised various speculations over the secret world of film Industry.
The recent sensational comment of the film actress, model, Sri Reddy, with regards to casting couch has again raised various speculations over the secret world of film Industry.
In the past too, many top actresses stated from time to time that there are several instances where they have lost lead roles in few movies for not accepting the directors’ demand for sexual favour. However, there are others who deny this too. The shocking part is why the film fraternity is not responding to the speculation that is doing rounds.
When asked about the ongoing issue, the upcoming actress, Priyanka Jawalkar, presently working with Arjun Reddy fame Vijay Devarakonda for a film, said, “I am very new to the industry, and I have not confronted such proposals for roles in films.”
On the other hand, Ileana D’cruz commented, “It might sound cowardly, but I do agree that if one speaks out about the casting couch, it will end their career. Years ago, a junior artiste down South, who was being propositioned by a big producer, sought my advice on how to deal with it.
I told her that it’s something that I couldn’t decide for her. It is her decision and that nobody could force it on her. Many people have done it and it’s up to her whether she wants to go ahead and do it or not. As far as exploitation and harassment are concerned, I wouldn’t stand for it.”
Script writer, Gopi Mohan raised his doubt saying, “Casting couch could be there with new comers, but no such instances happen with top heroines in Telugu film industry. With many years of experience, I can confidently say that there is no such case I have come across, especially with respect to prominent directors or actors asking heroines sexual favour in return to confirm their roles in films. We respect women and encourage them with new roles only after judging their acting skills.” However, he added, every domain has its own flaws and it is the same with the film industry too.
This is not the first time that actresses have boldly spoken about the issue. The popular actress Kajal Aggarwal had said (in 2017), “Personally, I hadn't faced casting couch. But, other actresses had shared their experiences with me. Few people sought sexual favours for film offers. It's very unfortunate that such things have been happening even now.”
Instead of trying to ignore, maintain silence and let the matter take a backseat, it’s time film fraternity make efforts to investigate reality. Film industry should wake up to make things right and take steps to prevent instances of casting couch and bring back confidence and dignity to acting profession.
