Hyderabad: It was a heart-warming scene at the trust office of Hyderabad Zakat and Charitable Trust & Foundation for Economic and Educational Development (FEED) here on Sunday.

The faces of young girls, each belonging to the poorer strata, beamed with delight after being bestowed with an honour that helps them realise their academic pursuits and perhaps dream of a good career option.

The Trust and FEED gave away their coveted ‘The Gems of the Nation Award’ to select beneficiaries at an impressive function where in Dr R Praveen Kumar, Secretary, Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TSWREIS) exhorted the students to dream big and chase their ambitions.

A morale-booster for the young girls was the inspirational rise of Praveen Kumar, who rose to exalted positions as a hugely respected bureaucrat despite his humble origins as a labourer’s son in Mahaboobnagar district.

To motivate the audience, he cited the case of Malavath Poorna, a girl from an impoverished family who became the youngest girl in the world to conquer Mount Everest. He said every girl-child was an asset in the nation-building exercise and they should be suitably empowered. He urged the girls to learn from the grit and determination of this Nizamabad girl so that they can steps closer to their own aspirations.

Praveen Kumar also asked parents and guardians to encourage their wards into staying focussed on their ambitions by pursuing their academics with a steely resolve.

Advisor (Minority Welfare) to TS government, AK Khan, hailed the awardees and hoped that these ‘GEMS’ would inspire their peers. He praised the Trust for rendering yeomen service in the past 25 years and spreading its network reach in Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh.
